For all children there are certain methods and facts about development that are important to keep in mind when we do any activities focused on learning and increasing school readiness. In this post we discuss some developmental changes and suggestions for keeping activities appropriate for this age group’s skill level. It is important to note that these posts are by no means comprehensive or applicable to every child. All children develop at different rates and have different talents and ability levels and it is perfectly okay if your child can or cannot do the things described below.

These children have experienced major developments in their ability to reason. They can understand cause and effect, different perspectives, and different spatial and functional relationships. These developments in reasoning can lead to children having very grand ideas, but they often lack the ability or skills to see something through to completion. These reasoning skills can be fostered through some adult encouragement. Children really feel proud when encouraged and it goes a long way.

Children ages 6-7 are very motivated to be first so they really like to get tasks done quickly. They enjoy playing games, taking things apart and trying to learn how they work and often learn well through dramatic and cooperative play.

Mathematically, children in this age group often have interests in math concerning time, money, measurement, and geometry. They also rely less on manipulatives (while continuing to use them) because they can do some mental math and mental problem solving skills. To push this group to stretch their brains we can introduce fractions, simple multiplication, and more complex sorts and forms of mental math. Perhaps they will demonstrate multiple ways to solve the same problem.

A stopwatch is a great way to get kids motivated. I was once a helper for one of the math teachers on this site and as soon as she gave me the watch, the kids were all over me.”Time me! Time me!” ❤️
