Endless Uno

For grades 1, 2, and 3, children might be excited to practice math facts with Uno cards. Use a half of a 3 x 5 note card. Place + on one half, a - on the other half. Have the child flip two cards. Place the + between the two cards and have the child tell you the sum of the values on the cards. Or if they are ready for it, use the subtraction sign. At first, you will want to make sure the child can start with the larger amount and subtract the smaller amount. Eventually, the child will understand negative numbers and be able to subtract in the order in which they were flipped. This can be alternated with multiplication when the child is ready. Division will need to be more controlled with a different game.

A variation on this activity would be to make it a game and divide the deck to see which player has the highest sum/product, or can do it most quickly.
