Even if it isn’t a book about math, reading to your child can support cognitive development. Reading to children has many overall benefits. For infants specifically, it can help them learn how to communicate, introduce them to new words, colors, numbers, and images. It can facilitate building a bond between parent and child.

In order to have reading and math correlate more closely there are many books focusing specifically on mathematical concepts. For example, counting books can be very good for toddlers to use to practice and to learn their numbers. You can also find books about computation like adding and subtracting, shapes, patterns, etc.

Other books that can be fun for children are search and find or I Spy books. These can be hard for younger children but can be found at different difficulty levels. These types of books make children look closely and will likely give them a chance to struggle but still succeed. If needed, whoever is reading with the child can assist but should try not to find the parts for them.
