Don't underestimate the power of building with blocks and various materials. Provide children with an assortment of "building materials" such as blocks, boxes, buckets, poles, sticks, etc. Let the age of the child steer your decision about what materials to make available to them, but the materials does not have to all be purchased specifically with building in mind. Allow your child to experiment with putting objects together to build a structure . It might initially just be putting two blocks together, but will eventually grow into an elaborate sturdy structure. Compliment their design. Allow them to tell you about it! They might imagine this to be a magnificent castle, or a garage for their trucks and tractors. Whatever it is to them, it will be beautiful to you! This activity is ageless, and is limited only by the materials the child has available to use.
