Having an understanding of time and how to measure it is very critical to the way we live our lives. Children ages 6-8 start to have a better understanding of time. In order for children to better understand the idea of time and all of its elements we must talk about time around our children.

We can talk to children about a variety of things that will make the concept more understandable. For example, if you are driving places with your child in the car you can explain to them how long it will take to get to your end destination. Maintaining and discussing a schedule with children is good in all settings. It helps them build trust and gain an understanding of routines. Another activity for children this age is to time them while they do different activities. Time them jumping up and down, coloring, or writing their ABC’s for a minute. Time increments can increase and activities can change, for example, you can time them to play outside for 15 minutes.

To help children develop an understanding of time, use words like hours, minutes, morning, afternoon, evening, days of the week, month of the year, and seasons. As children get older they will develop a better understanding of time and its complexity.
