Even though our children cannot understand the complexities of time, we can begin to teach infants and toddlers these concepts. We can communicate time to 0-2’s by helping to establish a schedule about their day. We must talk about time when we are with our children. We can talk to them about a variety of things like what you will be doing throughout the day, the amount of time they have left for the activities they are doing, and how long you will be traveling.

It is important to talk about these things with and in front of children even if we think they cannot understand us. Using words like hours, minutes, morning, afternoon, evening, and the days of the week will help them slowly develop an understanding of time. As children get older they will develop a better understanding of time and our conversations with them about time can become more advanced.
