Having the ability to recognize the number of objects in a small group (like the number of dots on a domino) is called subitizing! This helps move children beyond the need to count with 1:1 correspondence, and towards seeing the ways in which numbers can be combined or decomposed. A child’s ability to subitize supports the development of early numeracy skills.

There are many ways to use dominoes to reinforce math concepts with children. One way is to use them to practice computation. You can give your child a few dominoes and ask them to add the two numbers to find a total. From there you can ask your child to write out all the parts of a fact family (see example).

There are many more ways to use dominoes as math manipulatives. One other way would be to have your child sort the dominoes by number, like all the pairs together or all the ones with a three together, or color or match them. You can also play the game of dominoes, for instructions see our games tab.
