As your child begins to understand numbers, it is beneficial to help them understand the counting sequence. This will help them be prepared for counting in Kindergarten. There are many ways to develop your child’s understanding of the counting sequence.
One way to develop an understanding of the counting sequence starting this young is to play hopscotch with your child(ren). Hopscotch is a game played with numbered stepping stones or circles drawn in a sidewalk or driveway and you jump from number to number while counting. You count up from one usually to 10. All the numbers should be visible from a central point so the child(ren) can easily run/jump from one to the next in the right order.
Another way to build up knowledge of the counting sequence is to point out numbers in the world. This can be done in a variety of ways but the most beneficial would be to have them count a sequence of numbers. This could be done using increasing house numbers or mile markers. They can also be asked to count quantities of blocks, pieces of food, cars, or even counting up the windows, doors, or other objects in the room.
