Variation #1

  • Give your child three different sized paper plates. Give the child enough items to fill all three plates without overlap.

  • After the child places at least one item on one plate, count them.

  • Ask the child to estimate how many items are on the other three plates and justify their estimation.

Variation #2

  • Give your child three different sizes of paper plates.

  • Give the child more items than are needed to put on the plates.

  • Based on the size of the plate and the size of the items, the child estimates how many items are on each size plate without overlap.
